Michael Rosenberg is the 2nd in my series of incredibly inspirational people called: #YouWowMe.
Michael is the kind of person who calls the city when a red light is out. He told me, “When I see something is wrong, I try to fix it.”
That passion for helping manifested into him founding the hugely successful Pets’ Trust non-profit in Miami. As Michael explains, “When I learned that we (our county) were killing 20,000 animals per year – killing 80,90, 100 healthy dogs and cats a day. That’s a problem that needs to be fixed so I started the Pets’ Trust.”
Within 3 months, he and Rita Schwartz and Lindsay Gorton had set up a formal Pets’ Trust foundation with the goal of creating a permanent funding source to stop the over-population of stray dogs and cats; convinced enough county commissioners to put a Pets’ Trust funding referendum on November’s ballot; raised $60,000 to promote the referendum; had close to 1,000 volunteers help with the campaign; convinced numerous celebrities to endorse the campaign including Cesar Milan The Dog Whisperer; and the referendum easily passed with almost 500,000 people voting for the Pets’ Trust (65% of the voters).
I first became aware of Michael Rosenberg while reading an article about the Pets’ Trust in the Miami Herald and noticed that their Pets’ Trust mascot, Pepe Sal, didn’t have a decent portrait so I contacted Michael and offered to do one for free. Little did I know that that initial email would later turn into many photo shoots for the Pets’ Trust.
Shown above is a photo I took of Michael when he spent an entire weekend in a dog cage at our county’s Animal Services as a publicity event to draw attention to the referendum on the ballot. The media loved it! All the TV networks showed up plus many print and radio outlets and my photo shown above went national on the AP (Associated Press) media network.
When I asked Michael why he felt compelled to create the Pets’ Trust, he explained: “I believe I have an emotional side of me that likes to take care of things…take care of people and animals. My degree is in piano so I guess I’m a romantic musician that cries at movies and feels empathy for people.”
