My photo of Pablo Cano’s burlesque marionette on the cover of the Miami New Times

Last week the Art Director of the Miami New Times, Miche Ratto, called to say he wanted to hire me to photograph this week’s cover.  To say the least, I was extremely delighted and honored and of all the subjects he wanted photographed it was Cuban marionette artist Pablo Cano who I know well and have photographed a few times already.  In just 24 hours we put together the shoot with Pablo, Miche and myself at the excellent Studio 1415 in North Miami whose co-owner Chris was a big help with equipment and lighting.  You’ll see in a few of the photos Pablo and Miche positioning Pablo’s marionettes.

The Miami New Times, owned by New York’s Village Voice and is “the definitive source of information for news, music, movies, restaurants, reviews, and events in Miami”, chose Pablo for the cover to debut his Red Velvet Theater which he launched last month (see my photos of his dress rehearsal inaugural production).  The 3 marionettes Pablo (who was voted Best Artist of the Year in Miami) chose for the photo shoot were: the burlesque star Kandy Kane, Boring Boris and Louis Armstrong.  Obviously, Kandy Kane stole the crowd and was chosen for the cover.
