On Tuesday I was honored and excited to be asked to photograph the cover of the upcoming July/August issue of American Bicyclist Magazine. This bi-monthly is published by the bicycle advocacy organization the League of American Bicyclists and is distributed internationally to all its members. Being an avid recreational and commuter bicyclist, I was thrilled with this new project.
The very first thing I did was call three people I know active in Miami’s biking community: Kathryn Moore, director of the South Florida Bicycle Coalition, Olga Cano with EMERGE Miami and Dario Gonzalez with Green Mobility Network & the Magic City Bicycle Collective. I had to locate four models to use for the shoot and I didn’t want to use professional models (Miami is known to have a few). Instead, I wanted people who are active in the local bicycling community. In just 36 hours, Kathryn and Olga helped me coordinate the best team of people for the shoot including: Mary Jane Mark, the owner of Miami’s largest independent bicycle store, Mack Cycle & Fitness; Guerby Mertil, Community Liaison for DecoBike, Miami Beach’s hugely successful bicycle sharing program; and Charles Driza and Aaron Roy, co-owners of Miami’s brand new Tropical Pedicabs (bicycle rickshaws).
With this team in place, we all met at the Rickenbacker Causeway which leads from Miami to Key Biscayne (my daily bicycle route) and has some of the best views of Miami’s skyline. I sat in the back of one of the Pedicabs while Aaron rode/drove me in front of our four models. I love the results.
I’d like to send out a big Thank You to everyone mentioned above and also Mack Cycle & Fitness for letting us use some really sweet bikes and accessories for the shoot and to Rachel Mark for assisting in the shoot.
In just 48 hours, we produced some great images. My favorites are shown above.
Which is your favorite?
