Legal Art Miami is “dedicated to providing artists with a support structure” according to their website. It’s a great resource for artists needing legal advice, grant writing assistance and other services. In addition they have a wonderful artist residency program providing live/work studio space for up to one year. I had the opportunity of spending an entire day at the Residency yesterday to photograph “a day in the life” of the Residency program. Noor Blazekovic, editor of IRREVERSIBLE magazine, asked me to photograph the resident artists over the course of an entire day so the magazine could portray the daily routine at the Residency.
Trying to coordinate 7 artists, a resident curator, their collaborative art partners and all their conflicting schedules was going to be daunting so the Executive Director of Legal Art, Kathleen Carignan, helped immensely to make sure each of the residents would be there at some point during the day so they would all be included in this photography project. The residency is housed in a recently renovated building in downtown Miami and within close distance to the Design District and the Wynwood Arts District. The current residents include: Jiae Joy Hwang, Pachi Giustinian from Buenos Aires, Wouter Bouchez who is the visiting resident curator from Belgium, Alfio Demestre from Argentina, Tasha Lopez de Victoria who works with her sister Monica as a collaborative arts duo named TMSisters, Manny Prieres who is represented by Spinello Gallery, and a collaborative partnership called Viking Funeral whose members would like to remain anonymous. Also shown in the images is Argentine artist Agustina Woodgate who is a close friend to the Residency and has helped place a few artists there.
I’ve posted 81 images shown below chronologically with captions so you can get an idea of an entire day at the Residency. If you know an artist either seeking legal assistance or who might be interested in the residency, feel free to forward the link to this blog post and gallery of images.
